Remote Controlled Airplane – Great Retirement Activity Or Good Way To Crash Cash?
I am now creating blog posts for all of the activities I review and I have a long one about RC Airplanes. Please head over here to check it out.
Metal Detecting Reviewed – Do You Enjoy Boredom?
At the beach I see people metal detecting all the time. They walk slowly, staring at the ground, waving their wand back and forth, efficiently covering every square inch of ground. But I rarely see them find anything and none of them are smiling. But I figured it I should try it for myself. I think that is the point of all of this. I also thought it would be OK to have a metal detector at the house. I didn’t buy anything too expensive which is good because I hated metal detecting. I rated metal detecting 2/10.
Surfing Is Amazing But The Conditions Aren’t Always…
I really like surfing. It is difficult and I can understand that not everyone is physically capable of surfing in retirement, but if you take care of your body and train for it you could be rewarded with my favorite activity and form of exercise. I rate surfing a 10/10!
Shark Fishing Was Wild – Maybe a little too intense?
Shark fishing was a wild ride. We paid a guide to set us up. He used a drone to send big chunks of bait 600 yards off shore (500 meters). We waited and waited and waited for sharks to bite (that was boring) but when they did it was intense. Pulling a shark in is really difficult and then the danger of being in the water with one was strange. If you think the video above seems chaotic, you are right! It was even more chaotic being in the waves in the dark. Shark Fishing was a wild ride. The shark fishing guide cost $500 and it was worth it, but I think Shark Fishing is too extra to be a retirement activity. It definitely isn’t for people who have heart problems! I rate Shark Fishing as 8/10.
Long Walks On The Beach
My wife and I really like to walk together. She’s the best and spending time with her is a joy. On the beach you don’t really have to think too much about your surroundings, you just get to walk in a meditative way. I think that is why I like it so much. There is no need to think about much so you can spend time inside your own head or spend time with your partner.
Here is a little video on how to hold hands while walking and not have it be too sweaty. It’s a good tip.
A Warning About Walking On The Beach – Here is a little story. From our house to one end of our beach is 4.5 miles. To the other end is 10 miles. Before we walked the long way and back (20 miles is a distance we have walked on payment before) we figured we would warm up by going the shorter way. It was going to be a walk of 9 miles. We set out on a Saturday about 2 hours before low tide When got to the far point we were already tired and our feet were getting sore. By the time we had finished the 9 miles we were beat! Walking on the sand is a lot harder than you would think and the wear on the soles of your feet is significant. Lesson learned, don’t try to walk too far too early. I’m hoping to have some serious callouses on my dogs soon. That way I can walk anywhere. Walking on the beach as a retirement activity 10/10.
Trash Fishing
I really enjoy doing environmental cleanup and my favorite way to do so is by boat. I have a little fishing boat that my friends and I use to clean up the rivers. We call this Trash Fishing. I absolutely adore Trash Fishing but I rate it as a 8/10 because it has proven to be very, very difficult to get friends to join me for this endeavor. I guess they don’t get the same enjoyment out of it that I do, so I down-rated it a bit.
Beach Cleanup
Let’s talk about beach cleanups. First, as you tell from above I really like the beach and I really like removing trash from the environment, so it should be no big surprise to find that I greatly enjoyed beach cleanups as a retirement activity. Beach cleanups got an especially high rating because the people planning the event had a cooler that allowed me to refill my water bottle and they had snacks too! I rate beach cleanups 9.8/10
