Getting Your Money’s Worth at the Buffet

I feel like retired people really like to get their money’s worth at the buffet, so I figured I would try that. After all, this project is about me, Retireman, trying all sorts of retirement activities and rating them.

For this activity I took some friends, my best friends, my family. They were pretty exctied about it, but in some cases didn’t plan very well. My daughter was a shining star at the buffet while the rest of us didn’t quite put them out of business. Here are ratings:

Mark, Age 18, 6’1″ and 155 lbs. – 7.0 – Mark would have rated it higher, but he wasn’t that hungry and then some spicy food got him. I have seen Mark destroy the Ichiban Buffet in the past so his performance in the video was not typical. He would have rated it an 8 if he was hungry.

Lisa, Retirmom, – 7.0 – Lisa doesn’t like to eat too much and she wants food of the highest quality not quantity.

Michael – Age 20, 5’11”, 175 lbs. – 6.4 – Michael has a shelfish allergy so all of the shrimp and crab is off limits to him. So is any salmon because they feed salmon shrimp shells to give it the orange color and that causes his airway to constrict. Youch. Anyway, it’s tough to get your moneys worth by eating chicken on a stick.

Margot – Age 18, weighs almost nothing – 9.0 – Margot was well prepared to tear into the buffet and she did. The quantity of shelfish she ate made up for her brother’s allergy.

Retireman – Age 55, 5’11”, 190 lbs. – 7.6 – I enjoyed the food but felt pretty terrible afterward. I did get my money’s worth because the dinner was only $16.99 which is about what I spend at Chipotle these days. Also, I didn’t eat breakfast the next day because I was still full. Still, I’m not sure I enjoyed it, I might have just been successful at it. There is a difference there. When choosing a retirement activity it isn’t about what you are good at or even what you can accomplish, we really should be looking for activities that we enjoy.
