Monkey Bikes

My friends and I bought “Monkey Bikes” which are somewhere between the minibike you had as a kid and a regular motorcycle. Honda makes one called the Monkey and we have those. They are inexpensive and fun as heck. They are also slow and silly.

I think that Honda sells quite a few Monkeys but I’m not sure many people ride them much. All four of my team recently bought used Honda Monkeys. All are 2019 models. It is presently 2025, so they are 6 years old. My Monkey had 500 miles on it. Matt’s had 1,100 miles, Dan’s had 4,000 miles, and Charlie’s bike had only 70 miles on it. People bought these fun little motorcycles and hardly ever rode them.

That’s a shame. It also indicates something. All of the people we bought these bikes from were similar to us. They were middle-aged men who bought the bikes hoping to have a little fun, but it is pretty obvious they never really had much fun. This begs some questions.

Why didn’t they ride them more often? What did they think they were going to do when they bought them? Do they not have anywhere to go? Why did they spend $4,500 before figuring all of this out?

I feel bad for these folks. They obviously have a sense of adventure, and they have money, but why didn’t they have any fun? Maybe it is bravery? Maybe it is hormonal. Maybe they became sick, although the guy I bought mine from seemed fine.

I think it is a lack of bravery. There are a lot of fun things you can do in your area and a lot of those things will be even more fun if you ride to them on a silly little motorcycle. So, whether you have decided to buy a Monkey Bike or a new kayak or bicycle, a sewing machine or a new set of golf clubs, please do yourself a favor and go out and use those tools to live a full and healthy retirement.

Here is a video of my friends and I crossing a river. We weren’t going anywhere we just did it for fun, like a bunch of 13 year olds.
